Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard
Rating: ★☆☆☆☆

Goodreads // Book Depository // Amazon

For me the hype of this book did not live up to expectations, I am sad to say.

The fact that it has such a high rating on Goodreads is actually worrying.

I felt that the characters and the entire plot were all undeveloped and hollow. They didn’t feel real, and I just could not relate to them. There was no substance or depth to anyone’s personality; every one of them was a typical I’ve-come-across-this-stereotype-a-million-times-before character.

And the plot? I have one word: predictable.

Cue: girl with special powers finds herself in unfamiliar circumstances/surroundings.

Cue: girl falls in love with bad boy character (despite essentially zero interaction between them).

Cue: love triangle – ‘good guy’ v ‘bad guy’. Who will she choose?!

Cue: girl obsesses over herself, her special abilities and her feelings for boy.

The thing that sold this book for me was the promise of a “big twist”. Well, it turns out it wasn’t a surprise at all – I began to suspect it very early on in the book and it was just so typical!

In summary, I regret not DNFeding the book.
